Wrist injury

The wrist

The wrist is a complex joint consisting of the bones of the lower arm, 8 minuscule wrist or carpal bones, and a series of muscles and tendons that control the fingers.

Wrist injuries can be classified in two groups:

An acute injury
These injuries generally occur as a result of a fall or a collision with another player or an object. The injury is caused by the straining or twisting, the impact or the ‘bending double’ of the wrist. The most common symptoms are acutely occurring pain, swelling and reduced mobility the wrist. The pain is caused by the damage to the tissue around the wrist. Following the correct treatment, these problems generally disappear.

An overuse injury
These forms of injury are caused by the fact that the burden to which the wrist is exposed is greater than the level of load the wrist can cope with.
As a consequence of this overburdening or overuse, tension and/or stretching the affected muscles around the wrist can cause pain symptoms.
An overuse injury is characterised by various stages of pain. The pain may occur only following exertion, but there can also be situations of constant pain.

Wearing a PSB wrist brace can help to stabilise the wrist, enabling the damaged tissue to recover. The brace can also be worn outside sport, in the immediate aftermath of the injury.
